ZTO Express (ZTO) matched fourth-quarter earnings forecasts late Tuesday and beat on revenue, positioning ZTO Express stock to clear a buy point.
XZTO Express Earnings
Estimates: ZTO Express earnings per share should fall 4% to 24 cents as revenue vaults 27% to $794 million, according to Yahoo Finance.
Results: ZTO earnings came in at 24 cents a share on revenue of $818.5 million. Parcel volume climbed 34.7% to 2.71 billion. Revenue from express delivery services increased 29.4%, led by a 34.7% increase in parcel volume. That was partially offset by a decrease in unit price per parcel due to incentives offered in response to competition.
Outlook: ZTO seeks to increase parcel volume 15 percentage points faster than the industry average this year.
"ZTO delivered a strong fourth quarter and closed out 2018 with a 1.3 percentage point increase in market share to 16.8%," Chairman and CEO Meisong Lai said. "We maintained our leadership position in the Chinese express delivery industry in terms of parcel volume, customer satisfaction and profit generation."
He added: "The Chinese express delivery industry continued to demonstrate healthy growth momentum with an increase of over 10 billion parcels in 2018."

ZTO Express Stock Technical Analysis
Shares rose 2% late to 20.40 after closing down 0.6% at 20.01 on the stock market today. While after-hours moves don't always translate to the regular session, ZTO Express stock is poised to break out from a cup-with-handle base with a 20.28 buy point, MarketSmith analysis shows. While the base is deep, it appears not so bad in the context of the late-2018 bear market.
ZTO Express stock has a superior IBD Composite Rating of 97. That puts it in the top 3% of all stocks and reflects in part four years of rising profits for this young IPO company. Analysts see EPS growing 21% to 82 cents for 2018, with the growth rate slowing to 17% for 2019.
The relative strength line, which tracks a stock's performance vs. the S&P 500, has been generally trending up since October. Look for it to make new highs.
ZTO stock is more volatile than most other leading stocks.
ZTO Express Counts Alibaba As Investor
ZTO Express taps China's growing e-commerce market. The express delivery company partners with smaller firms for first-mile/last-mile pickup and delivery services.
Its backers include Alibaba (BABA). The Chinese e-commerce giant days ago made its fourth investment in the Chinese courier sector, adding STO Express to a list that includes YTO Express and ZTO Express.

Celgene (CELG) and Novartis (NVS) could go head-to-head in a patent battle over Celgene's multiple sclerosis treatment ozanimod, an analyst said Tuesday.
XOzanimod belongs to a class of drugs called S1P modulators. If approved, the drug's dose will be adjusted over time in a process called "dose titration." Titration aims to pinpoint the maximum benefit of a drug without causing side effects.
Credit Suisse analyst Vamil Divan notes competitor Novartis owns the dose-titration patent for S1P modulators. This could hurt Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) looming acquisition of Celgene. Bristol is betting $74 billion on Celgene's approved products and experimental drugs.
This is a "critical component of ozanimod's product profile as all three proposed indications (uses) currently require dose titration," he said in a report to clients. "We think this issue has been under investors' radar, and we highlight it as a potential concern for the deal."

Questioning Multiple Sclerosis Treatment
Bristol, on the other hand, says it's aware of the patent issue, Divan said. The pharma "believes they will be able to manage through this hurdle and are not overly concerned about it," he said.
This is not the first issue facing ozanimod, however. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration refused to review Celgene's application for approval of ozanimod. The FDA cited issues in the "nonclinical and clinical pharmacology sections" of its application.
On Monday, Celgene said it submitted an application for approval of ozanimod in Europe. The biotech expects to ask the FDA to approve ozanimod as a multiple sclerosis treatment by the end of March.
"Celgene believes ozanimod could be a best-in-class, oral option for use early in the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis," Chief Medical Officer Jay Backstrom said in a written statement.
Could Be A Boon For Another Biotech
The patent troubles for ozanimod could be a boon for Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA), Credit Suisse's Divan said. Arena is also developing an S1P modulator called etrasimod. But etrasimod doesn't require dose titration, meaning it won't have to go up against Novartis' patent.
"While it's unclear what impact this patent may have on the potential launch ability for ozanimod, we continue to see etrasimod as potentially best in class in what Arena management describes as a $4 billion opportunity for the asset," he said.
Divan has an outperform rating and 63 price target on Arena stock. He has a neutral rating and 59 price target on Bristol stock. In morning action on today's stock market, Bristol stock lost 1% to close at 50.38. Celgene stock ticked up 0.4% to 85.60.

Some of the most costly mistakes occur when we overlook the small stuff. By failing to capture critical details, we make faulty decisions.
In some professions, details determine success. Accountants, for example, cannot afford to glide through their workday without combing through tax forms and supporting documents. They are paid to focus on details and accurately crunch numbers.
How do accountants train themselves to be detail-oriented? It starts with steely concentration and intellectual curiosity. They clear their mind and seek answers to key questions. They synthesize reams of client information and produce tax returns that pass muster.
Of course, accountants make mistakes just like everyone else. But by following these six tips, you're more apt to do error-free work and catch details that others miss.
1. Put Processes To Work
If you engage in repetitive tasks, the mundane nature of the work can lead to complacency. Beware of allowing the routine to deaden your mental acuity.
Put processes in place that strengthen your performance and reduce errors. Develop reliable systems, such as quality-control measures or random audits of your output, that help you absorb relevant details.
"In my profession, you've got to make sure you have checks and balance in place," said Mike Sacco, a certified public accountant in Worcester, Mass. "This is my 33rd tax season, and I've always been big on paying attention to detail."
2. Team Up
Enlist colleagues to lend a hand. An observant, disciplined co-worker can prove invaluable in providing an extra layer of oversight.
"We use colored pencils to make sure we've seen this or that number," Sacco said. "One of us uses one color, and then the reviewer uses a different color" in going over the same material.
3. Refresh Your Mind
Even if you have supreme powers of concentration, you may eventually tire of doing meticulous work such as preparing complex tax returns. Pushing yourself to burn the midnight oil can be counterproductive, especially during tax season when accountants face pressing deadlines.
"Sometimes, you've got to reboot and look at something with fresh eyes," Sacco said. "It's knowing when it's time to walk away from it and come back later. If you're rushing (and unwilling to take a break), that's what causes mistakes."
4. Set A High Bar
Set high expectations for digesting every detail without letting up. Some of the biggest headaches result from momentary inattentiveness.
"An easy mistake in accounting, like transposing a number, can lead to a ripple effect," Sacco said. One minor mishap can trigger far larger and more intractable problems, so exercise vigilance from the outset.
5. Remove Distractions
Sensory overload can limit your attention to detail. If you're snacking at your desk or glancing at your phone, you can divert your focus from what matters most.
Michael Cecere, a certified public accountant in Canton, Mass., shuts off his phone and email alerts when he needs to concentrate on work. Eliminating potential diversions lessens the odds that your mind will stray from the task at hand.
6. Write And Hear
You may think you're writing a report that's simple and straightforward, but readers may struggle to understand your main point. Test the clarity of your message by hearing it after you write the first draft.
"When I write memos, I use Microsoft's ReadAloud (text-to-speech app)," Cecere said. "Having a computer voice read back to you what you wrote, you can tell if the sentence structure is all wrong or it didn't come together like it did in your head."
