As you plan year-end financial moves, you are surely wondering: Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day?

Well the equity markets are all open as normal for New Year's Eve, which counts as a regular trading day. Unlike Christmas Eve, which was a shortened trading day, the markets will close after a full day on New Year's Eve, ending at 4 p.m. ET.

However, equities traders nursing hangovers will be relieved to discover the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will both be closed on Jan. 1, 2019.

Meanwhile, bond traders have an extra reason to toast. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association recommends an early 2 p.m. close to fixed-income markets on New Year's Eve. This is in addition to a full close on New Year's Day.

Options and futures traders should check the CME Group's holiday trading schedule. While all markets are closed for New Year's Day, there are a variety of early closure times on Monday, Dec. 31, and Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The New Year's holiday will not be the only break in trading in January. The next big holiday coming up is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday Jan. 21, which will also see a stock market closure.

Ahead of the New Year's break, make sure you are staying up to date with the stock market today.
