A study of original shows on the top streaming and pay-TV networks indicates that the quality of Netflix (NFLX) shows is declining as the internet television service ramps up production.
X"Netflix is toward the rear of the pack when it comes to pure quality of its original series, seemingly suffering from its focus on churning out as many shows as it can," Andrew Dodson, an editor with Streaming Observer, said in a report Tuesday.
Streaming Observer evaluated original shows from nine major television networks using ratings from review aggregators Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. It averaged all shows on a network to get a score of 1 to 100, with 100 being the absolute best quality.
Netflix landed in seventh place with a composite score of 70. Two years ago, Netflix was in fourth place with a score of 74, Streaming Observer said.
HBO Leads Pack
HBO, owned by AT&T's (T) WarnerMedia, led the pack with a score of 75. AMC and Hulu tied for second with 74 each. AMC Networks (AMCX) owns the AMC channel, while Hulu is a joint venture of Walt Disney (DIS), 21st Century Fox (FOXA), Comcast (CMCSA) and AT&T.
Amazon (AMZN) Prime Video, FX and Starz tied for fourth place with 72 each. 21st Century Fox owns FX, while Lionsgate (LGFA) owns Starz.
Of course, what the critics like and what the general public likes can be two separate things. Some Netflix shows and movies, such as the big-budget film "Bright," were a hit with audiences, but were disliked by critics.
According to critics, the best show on Netflix is the comedy series "Master of None" with a composite score of 96. Its worst show is the dark teen comedy "Insatiable," with a score of 17.
Netflix plunged 6.2% to close at 341.18 on the stock market today. Its shares likely dipped on a report by Morgan Stanley touting Apple's (AAPL) upcoming streaming video service.
