Critically acclaimed Wild West video game "Red Dead Redemption 2" from Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO) outgunned the competition during the holiday sales season, a survey of gamers indicates.

"Take-Two's 'Red Dead Redemption 2' clearly won the holiday with almost half of respondents playing that game," Jefferies analyst Timothy O'Shea said in a note to clients.

Jefferies surveyed 500 core gamers in the U.S. about their holiday purchases and spending plans. The results were positive for Take-Two, Activision Blizzard (ATVI) and European-traded Ubisoft, but more cautious for Electronic Arts (EA), O'Shea said. Jefferies released the survey report late Friday.

"Red Dead's player base also played the fewest other games, suggesting deep engagement, a positive read-through for Red Dead Online," O'Shea said.

Over a third of respondents played "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4," an Activision product. About the same percentage played "Fortnite," from privately held Epic Games.

The player bases for "Red Dead," "Call of Duty" and "Fortnite" were "significantly larger" than for other games. Those other games include the latest editions of the Battlefield and Fallout franchises, he said.

EA, Bethesda Games Underperformed

Key underperforming titles this holiday season included EA's "Battlefield 5" and Bethesda's "Fallout 76," O'Shea said.

The average gamer in the survey had played 1.6 AAA games in the past month. AAA, or triple-A, games are major, big-budget titles.

The hugely popular "Fortnite" game had a modest impact on other titles. Three-quarters of respondents said "Fortnite" had not cut into playtime for other games. Games most impacted by "Fortnite" were shooters like "Call of Duty" and "Overwatch."

Looking ahead, the gamers surveyed said they had a higher level of anticipation for Ubisoft's "The Division 2" than for EA's "Anthem." Those games are due out Feb. 22 and March 15, respectively.

Take-Two stock fell 1.6% to 102.94 on the stock market today. Activision dropped 0.5% to 46.57. EA slipped 0.5% to 78.91.
