LAS VEGAS — Wireless chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) on Monday touted its leadership position in the rollout of 5G wireless technology worldwide.

At a media event one day before the official opening of CES 2019, the annual consumer technology trade show, Qualcomm announced more than 30 5G design wins from hardware companies. The majority of those devices are smartphones featuring the company's Snapdragon 855 mobile chip.

"It will be powering nearly every 5G device in 2019," said Pete Lancia, Qualcomm vice president of marketing. "The impact of 5G is going to be significant. It's going to enrich lives. It's going to create jobs."

5G wireless is a major theme at CES 2019, with networks coming on line this year. Fifth-generation wireless, or 5G for short, will offer multigigabit connectivity, allowing for superhigh-speed data downloads and ultrahigh-resolution video streaming. It also will provide low-latency data links for Internet of Things devices, including self-driving cars.

Taking A Shot At Apple

Earlier Monday, a Qualcomm executive speaking at the LG Electronics media event seemingly took a shot at Apple (AAPL). Apple reportedly plans to wait until 2020 to come out with a 5G iPhone using a modem built by Qualcomm rival Intel (INTC).

Qualcomm Senior Vice President Jim Tran said his firm is working with a wide array of smartphone vendors planning 5G handsets in 2019, including LG.

"If you're going to bring a device in 2020, you're definitely going to be late to 5G," Tran said.

The company is locked in a bitter legal battle with Apple over patent terms and royalty rates. It devoted most of its pre-CES press briefing to spotlight its automotive initiatives, including chip technology for advanced safety and infotainment systems.

Shares of Qualcomm fell 0.3% to close at 56.44 on the stock market today.
