LAS VEGAS — Graphics-chip maker Nvidia (NVDA) says its latest video game processors will usher in a new era of ultra-realistic graphics.

At a media event late Sunday ahead of the CES 2019 trade show, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang introduced the GeForce RTX 2060 processor. It will be available on Jan. 15 for $349.
The company hopes the new mainstream chipset will convince its installed base of millions of PC video game players to upgrade to the latest technology.
The RTX 2060 is based on Nvidia's Turing processor architecture. The chips feature a technology called ray tracing that simulates how your eyes perceive light. Ray tracing offers greatly improved effects like shadows and light reflection and refraction, Huang said. The new GeForce chips also come with artificial intelligence for sharpening images and creating more lifelike faces.
"AI and ray tracing are two fundamental pieces of technology that we believe will bring the next generation of computer graphics," Huang said.
Cheaper Model
The RTX 2060 is less expensive than the first Turing gaming processors introduced last August. Critics knocked those high-end graphics processors — the RTX 2070, 2080 and 2080 Ti — as overpriced. They started at $499, $699 and $999, respectively. Reviewers also said the chips didn't have the promised performance bump in video games.
Nvidia said it would take time for game developers to optimize their games to take advantage of ray tracing and other technologies.
One game built for the Turing processors was "Battlefield 5" from Electronic Arts (EA). Huang admitted that the game's graphics when using the RTX processor were not that impressive initially. But in a few short weeks, the game's developers improved its performance by 50%, he said. And they continue to make performance tweaks, Huang said.
The new GeForce RTX 2060 will be available in desktop PCs from Acer, Dell (DELL), HP (HPQ), Lenovo and other system builders on Jan. 15.
Hardware Partners Picking It Up
Nvidia said hardware partners also are launching 40 new laptop computer models that use the GeForce RTX 2060. They will be available starting on Jan. 29.
Nvidia stock climbed 1.1%, near 137.70, in premarket trading on the stock market today.
B. Riley FBR analyst Craig Ellis said the new gaming processor is a positive development for Nvidia.
"We are heartened by new products in the volume part of the market," he said in a report Monday. However, the launch is occurring during a seasonally soft period, Ellis said.
He reiterated his neutral rating on Nvidia stock with a price target of 190.
