Amazon (AMZN) and Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBGI) are reportedly eyeing a multibillion-dollar deal for the YES Network, the New York Yankees' regional sports network, as Walt Disney Company (DIS) looks to wrap up its 21st Century Fox (FOX) acquisition by shedding assets.

The Yankees organization, which owns 20% of YES Network and has first rights to acquire the remaining share, has approached several companies on teaming up to make the purchase, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

Besides Amazon and Sinclair, it could partner with cable operator Altice USA (ATUS) to acquire 80% of YES Network.

Disney reportedly seeks a $5 billion-$6 billion valuation for the YES Network, which carries Yankee baseball and Brooklyn Nets basketball games.

The talks come as the Yankees and other baseball teams jockey to acquire marquee players, such as sluggers Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

Amazon stock rose 1.2% and Disney stock 0.7% on the stock market today, while Sinclair nudged down 0.1%. Altice stock was flat as it continues to consolidate below the 50-day average. Among other media stocks, Madison Square Garden (MSG) rose 1.7% and CBS (CBS) edged up 0.1%.

Why Amazon May Pursue YES Network

Disney's blockbuster $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets got regulatory approval in June, on the condition that Disney shed Fox's regional sports networks.

Fox's YES Network, an acronym for Yankee Entertainment and Sports, is regarded as one of the most valuable sports properties in the country.

Meanwhile, Amazon has been keen to boost its streaming offerings, especially in live sports. The e-commerce titan already livestreams National Football League games on Amazon Prime.
