Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) fell short of second-quarter revenue estimates despite turning an unexpected profit early Thursday, on the heels of American Eagle Outfitters' (AEO) disappointing guidance Wednesday.

Estimates: Per-share loss of 5-cents a share, narrowing from the prior-year quarter's 16-cent per-share loss. Revenue seen rising 9% to $847 million. Same-store sales growth of 3.7% overall, including 2.6% at Abercrombie and 4.4% at Hollister, according to Consensus Metrix estimates.

Results: EPS of 6 cents on revenue of $842.4 million. Same-store sales increased 3%, with Hollister up 4% and Abercrombie up 2%.

Outlook: Abercrombie backed its full-year revenue growth view of 2%-4% and its same-store sales growth view of 2%-4%.

Stock: Shares plunged 17% to 22.55 in the stock market today. Abercrombie stock fell below its 200-day moving average for the first time since November.

Peer apparel retailer American Eagle topped earnings and turned in strong same-store sales growth on Wednesday, but weaker-than-expected guidance sank shares. American Eagle stock slid  3.7% Thursday after diving 6.5% Wednesday.

The retail sector is in the midst of a strong season, with shoe sellers DSW (DSW) and Shoe Carnival (SCVL), for example, both posting beat-and-raise quarters. Calvin Klein parent PVH (PVH) topped but offered weak guidance late Wednesday.

But beating analysts' quarterly estimates wasn't enough to help shares of consumer electronics giant Best Buy (BBY) or membership warehouse BJ's Wholesale Club (BJ), which provided light and mixed guidance, respectively.
