Intel (INTC) is reportedly considering an audacious move to acquire Broadcom (AVGO) to hijack its attempt to takeover Qualcomm (QCOM).
The buyout is looking increasingly doubtful after a federal probe was launched into the deal, with the Committee on Foreign Investment saying it is troubled about Broadcom's relationships with foreign entities.
But if it appears Broadcom is likely to secure a Qualcomm deal, Intel would step in with its own offer for Broadcom, which currently has a market value of about $104 billion, the Journal said. Insiders also said Intel may decide to make other, smaller acquisitions if such an event transpired.
Intel said it doesn't comment on speculation but noted it has made acquisitions like Mobileye and Altera and is working to integrate them.
Shares of Broadcom surged 5.2% to 267.01 in after-hours trading on the stock market today. Intel dipped 0.8%, and Qualcomm eased 0.4%.
